SPECIAL EDITIONS | Some Salvator Mundi Resources
Some Salvator Mundi Resources

In recent years I have laid focus on four thematic platforms: Salvator Mundi studies, Picasso studies (studies on Picasso in 1956),
studies on the iconography of sustainability, and on my history of the blue hour (my personal cultural history).
My Salvator Mundi studies, which I have undertaken since 2016, have resulted also in my 2021 book A New Salvator Mundi History (published online here on this site).
All my contributions to this particular field of Leonardo studies, including links to all the 32 chapters of my book, and also links to more recent essays and notes,
are listed here:

Some Salvator Mundi Resources

A HISTORY OF THE BLUE HOUR | A History of the Blue Hour
A History of the Blue Hour

Much more, and something much more specific than just a history of twilight: my history of the blue hour is not only a ›work in progress‹ exploration of the blue hour
in literature, film, the visual arts, and in history; it is also my very personal exploration, my personal cultural history. All contributions can be found here:

A History of the Blue Hour

PICASSO IN 1956 | Picasso in 1956
Picasso in 1956

Since 2017 I have been working on a publication on ›Picasso in 1956‹, which is now resulting in two books which I will both publish here:
my more essayistic short book on Picasso’s Chinese Summer, the summer of 1956, which brought several encounters with Chinese artists for Picasso,
and the more epic book on Picasso in the year of 1956, whose title is The Difficulty of Seeing. All my contributions to Picasso studies,
my books as well as my essayistic writing, can be found here:

THE ART HISTORY OF SUSTAINABILITY | The Art History of Sustainability
The Art History of Sustainability

I have come back to an old subject which I had been interested in since the 1990s: the history and theory of sustainability (logo by Craiyon).
And this I have combined with my art historical and literary interests. Which resulted, and further is resulting in studies on the Art History of Sustainability.
All my contributions can be found here:

The Art History of Sustainability

EXHIBITION | Leonardo’s Pen
Leonardo’s Pen

(Picture: youtube.com)
Now opened – our online exhibition Leonardo’s Pen. A world premiere.
Since this is the first Leonardo da Vinci exhibition at all, being dedicated,
exclusively, to the stimuli that Leonardo’s writings, his notebooks and letters,
have been to 20th century writers and thinkers. To people concerned with texts.
Thinkers in technology (Bill Gates, Alan Kay, Steve Jobs and Lila Tretikov)
rank here next to 20th century poets (Paul Valéry, Rainer Maria Rilke and Gunnar
Ekelöf), and for the first time we do see how Leonardo, chiefly as a symbolical figure,
has stimulated 20th century cultural and technological history. Not by his paintbrush
in the first place, but as a writer, by being a source of inspiration as a writer,
and by his pen.

PICTORIAL HISTORY | Pictorial History
Pictorial History

(Picture: DS)
Thematic expansion is due. Upcoming soon is a new series of snippets,
dedicated to the visual representation of history (and its critique).
From the Wild West to the Cold War and back. From the Middle Ages to whatever ages.
But we will remain contemporary modern wherever we might be (like a Parisian
may be a Parisian wherever she or he might be).
This field of ›Pictorial History‹ might be labelled under ›cultural journalism‹,
but what we do here is anti-Feuilleton, in that we are not inclined to follow
the logic of present events (pressing us to do what we are not interested to do
at all, and not feel necessary or worthwhile to do).
The critique of Pictorial History may also be named as another subdiscipline of
Visual Apprenticeship. And we will expand with that, since the Giovanni Morelli
Monograph
is no longer consuming all our energies, very soon as well.

THE GIOVANNI MORELLI MONOGRAPH | The Giovanni Morelli Monograph
The Giovanni Morelli Monograph

(Cover: DS; for pictures credits see the monograph)
The Giovanni Morelli Monograph does now sail with us on this website. –
Do think of it as another building on the artificial island of my homepage.
Or as the castle on that island (or as the tower of that castle).
I’d like to give some reasons here why you may want to read that monograph
that encompasses a visual biography and a workbook (a study, as it is called here).
You may want to read it, for example,

because it encompasses a visual biography of a ›thinking visual person‹,
a visual biography that draws on the visual resources available online,
and aims to render the visual education, the visual apprenticeship (as I do call it),
of a visual person. Text and image do interact and work together, and you may want
to ›log in‹ into that process of visual education, perhaps asking: what have I learned
to see; compared to what other persons (or a specific person) has learned
(or also: unlearned) to see.

Or you may want to read it

because this monograph aims at a critical highlighting of connoisseurial practices,
and this certainly more critical (but also more dedicated) than an art historical tradition
has generally shown as to the connoisseurial practices of Giovanni Morelli,
one of the foundational figures of more reflected, rational, or scientific connoisseurship;
and you may want to think about what scientific connoisseurship was meant to be;
what it may have become; and what it may become in the future. The Giovanni Morelli Study
is also meant as a platform to develop; perhaps in terms of further additions, that is:
of resources to that platform; or also in terms of feedback and further stimulation of discussion
(a feedback section has also been established).

Or you may want to read it simply for the (hopefully) pleasure of an intellectual adventure.
That leads one into the world of an, as I chose to say, all-receptive human being, that is:
into the world of literature as well as art connoisseurship, into the world of the natural sciences
and the humanities, into times of war and revolution, into the world of real politics
(also in connoisseurship), but also into real and imaginary landscapes, that is: into free nature.

Please do think of the whole endeavor as an experiment in more than one sense
(since it is also about a questioning how an art book may look like in the future).
I have not in mind to publish this book in print. But myself I am going to follow further some
of the directions sketched out above. As the 200th birthday of Giovanni Morelli is upcoming
(on 25 February 2016), but also beyond that date (revision, meant to improve that monograph will
occur permanently; after February of 2015 I will also document major revisions, to make such revisions
transparent, if such may occur).

I wish that it may be a pleasant reading and studying. Please do enjoy the Giovanni Morelli Monograph!
Dietrich Seybold, 23 August 2015
