Dedicated to September

(Picture: Hans Bol)

September

(2.10.2023)

September

Worst September ever? No, but yes, perhaps –
Worst September ever.
And still the most luminous, the most transparent month.
A twilight dome – warm golden Western skies, in opposition
To the greyblue pale East – a twilight dome unseen while
Worries chasing the worried uphill, downhill, and hurried towards home.
Noises and silences, and squirrels turning into
Lionesses and back.
September – twilight of summer, the majestic ship of autumn coming,
Making its passage through a cold canal,
With airs – the shipman says – still warm on upper decks.
Worst, no: best, perhaps the most clarified September ever.
If good times are a gift requiring silent thankfulness,
Bad times require fencing, giving pressure back, by brush, by pen.
So be it: Worst September ever – and may October come.
