Visual Apprenticeship:
The Giovanni Morelli Visual Biography

(Picture: verdi.passioneperlacultura.it: Paul Tétar van Elven: Inaugurazione del Parlamento a Palazzo Madama il 2 aprile 1860)

What is a Visual Biography supposed to be? What is it supposed to be here? And what it is supposed to look like?

The Visual Biography of Giovanni Morelli is meant to be a biography that focusses on the biography of someone’s eye, the eye of a connoisseur that his contemporaries admired also for his expertise in human nature and as a man of the world. We keep three things in focus: in that we reconstruct the biography of Giovanni Morelli we do firstly nothing else than any biography would do: to reconstruct the events, the impulses, the contradictions, the sceneries of one’s life. But we focus on the visual experiences and on what we do call Visual Apprenticeship. And to do this we do not just assemble visual materials in the first place.
We do – secondly – listen in into the correspondences that Giovanni Morelli had with his most important mentors, his friends, and later with his pupils: about visual things, about Visual Apprenticeship. And we reconstruct, in that we ›walk‹ with Giovanni Morelli, his friends, and also with his opponents through this Visual Biography of his, the biography of his eye.
And this – thirdly – is where we start to work also with visual materials. In hearing the discussions, and in looking at the looking of these men, and in comparing our looking with how they looked. On things that we do look at here as well, because we attempt to visualize as much and as best as we can. With the aim to compare, to learn how to look, but not only to compare and to learn. But also to take our inspirations here for our going our own way. In that, for example, we try to look differently. Or at other things. And not even necessarily at visual things. But for example also at the writing of biography. Or Visual Biography.
