The Blue Hour in Ecotopia

(Picture: DS)

»But the scene [a group of hunters returning], in the gathering dusk, was ghoulish enough. (Most Ecotopian streets are pitch dark at night – evidently their power policies have caused them to curtail night lighting almost entirely. Can’t tell why this doesn’t lead to the crime panic it would bring among us. Have asked people whether they feel safe at night, and they reply Yes without hesitation – claim they can see well enough, and turn the conversation onto something irrelevant: how bicycle lights look, bobbing through the night like fireflies, or how fine it is to be able to see the stars even in the city. Good thing they don’t have cars, or the accident rates would be spectacular.)«

(from Ernest Callenbach, Ecotopia, originally published in 1975, p. 29)
