Dedicated to Seeing Picasso in 1956

Seeing Picasso

(17.10.2023)

Seeing Picasso

I always had wanted to see
Picasso, and at his home – as a Picasso
Tourist, which means: in his studio (at Cannes,
Villa La californie).

And so I joined a Chinese Cultural
Delegation in ’56, the year of the 100
Flowers Movement, and the way I did manage to join
Was mere camouflage, and I went with
The group as the one to interpret, specialized
In Chinese and not in Spanish, but actually I do not speak

Chinese very well, actually I do not speak
Chinese at all, nor Spanish, but still

I did manage to see
Picasso, welcoming the Chinese Cultural
Delegation and Picasso, a little bit bored, it seemed
Said to me (in his studio, right at the entrance where
The commode with hats, masks and so on, and with the mirror, was placed, and
Where Picasso used to make fun to break
The ice (because actually he was, it was said, quite shy).

To me he said: just among us, if I had been born
Chinese, I would write my pictures – not paint them, but since
I’m a Spaniard, I do write my pictures in my own way.
And this was what I kept in mind

From ’56, when I
Had not even been born.
