Dedicated to Wintry Stanza

(Picture: Paula Modersohn-Becker: Rainer Maria Rilke)

Wintry Stanza

(17.12.2023)

Wintry Stanza

A powdery shower hits
My face, a sudden
Shudder, icy particles –
I tighter collar might be
Needed. Two boys
Walking away, with
Grinning faces and
Decided, but it was
Just a sudden wind, a
Tamarisk
Waving through,
Susurrantly, a
Winter.

Two boys I see evaluating
Types of snow for snowballs,
Elementary. But yes, why not, the
Grass is green, then greenish
White, wet white, then frozen
White. A lamplight
Enters wintry woodscapes suddenly
Warm firefly that hibernating
Did dismiss and a warm
Sign of what now will
Any time be needed and what
Winter leaves behind, while
At the same time it is feeling like
Secretly
Arousing memories and needs.
Arousing, fostering and
Cherishing.

Rilke – what he’s trying
To say is – I believe – if
You have – if you are inhabiting
Nature, as naturally as you are
Feeling that nature, in return,
Inhabits you, then
You are equipped
With all you need, which is
Being in touch with wealth, all
Wealth, which does cross out
Your pettifoggish rationality, your fear
To miss what you, they say, are meant
To see. Just feel – be
Mindful (as one would say today), and
Catch the day – in feeling, by
Feeling being one with nature. And you
Have escaped the fear, the prisons of the chaining frosts of
Winter, in
Winter, given that you are able to in-
Voke what is, in nature as in life,
Even if it is not presently with you or
There. And even if you are presently nothing
But resistance.

And you are saved, you might be
Saved.
Given that you are able to
Dig in you (as Rilke might have said). So
Dig in you.

A sudden wind, a
Tamarisk
Waving through,
Susurrantly, a
Winter.
