Jean Paul Richter and Giorgione

Jean Paul Richter (1847-1937)
(for detailed picture credit see my Das Schlaraffenleben der Kunst)

(Picture: DS)

Summing up a connoisseur’s biography – the story of the so-called Giustiniani portrait (Gemäldegalerie Berlin). See my biography of Jean Paul Richter (and check out contemporary paraphrases of that portrait done by Elizabeth Peyton; ah, here seems to be one).
Jean Paul Richter, by the way, was the uncle and not the father of renowned Giorgione-scholar George Martin Richter; and Jean Paul Richter might have been among those suggesting Giorgione’s authorship as to the St. Petersburg Judith, but he did dismiss this attribution after having seen the painting on location.

Louise M. Richter with Sandro Richter
(for detailed picture credit see my Das Schlaraffenleben der Kunst)

For some time, by the way, the Giustiniani portrait was owned by Mrs. Jean Paul Richter, i.e. Louise M. Schwab. We honor her with the lovely 19th century rendering of a connoisseuse on the left.
